Jemima Dallas (MacKillop) Shaw

Jemima Dallas (MacKillop) Shaw

Passed on: April 18th, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mom, age 87, on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, surrounded by love at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Jemima is survived by her devoted soulmate of 60 years, Neil ‘Tony’ and her two children, Kirk (Jackie) and Karen (Dean), who will always miss Mom. Aunt Jemima will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Roderick and Effie (Matheson) MacKillop, and siblings, John F., Annie, Dolena, Donnie, Mary, Rachel and Florence.
Jemima was a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Throughout Mom’s life, she loved working at the Braemore Home, the Cove Guest Home and the City Hospital. She was happiest with a paint brush in her hand, sewing, going for a drive, visiting, enjoying Grand River or preparing wonderful meals, especially her secret spaghetti sauce, as well as her famous oatcakes that she would share with family and friends to brighten their day. Mom and Dad could be found around Cape Breton anywhere there was someone playing a fiddle, square dancing or a Gaelic milling frolic.
The family cannot express enough THANKS to everyone at the Cove (Skylight) for their love and care of Mom during the last four and a half years, as well as being so kind to Dad. Thank you to Rev. Whent for his prayers and visits, along with special friends, Margaret Isenor and Chrissie MacLeod for their overwhelming love and support. Also, thank you to Mom’s longtime family physician, Dr. Peter Jackson.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, April 20 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jemima’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, the Cove Guest Home or a charity of your choice.
“To love a person is to know the song in their heart and sing it to them when they’ve forgotten.”
