It is with broken hearts that we regret to announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, nanny, sister, aunt and friend, Mary “Mae” Isabel Gouthro, age 91, on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in Georges River on May 1, 1926, Mae was the third child in a family of nine, born to loving parents, the late Robert and Margaret (O’Handley) Day. Mae was a longtime resident of Scotch Lake Road in Georges River until her move to the Guest Home. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Bras d’Or. In her younger years Mae was employed as a housekeeper and Nanny, and then as a Nurses Aid at St. Rita’s Hospital in Sydney until she had her children, at which time she devoted her life to her family.
Mum will be fondly remembered for her gentle spirit and the quiet strength, determination and sense of humor that she possessed. She also appreciated the beauty of everything in nature, especially feeding wild birds and gardening.
Mae is survived by her children, Valerie (Frank) Foote, Stewiacke, Margaret Chiasson, Bras d’Or, Maureen (Earl) Babin, Timberlea, Elizabeth (Andy) Verschuren, North Sydney and Tom (Joan) Gouthro, Hammonds Plains. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret Day, Georges River, Roberta (Henry) Paige, Louisbourg, also by several nieces and nephews.
She will be missed by all her family and friends including her eight grandchildren, Darrell, Lindsay, Andrew, Robert, Megan, Renee, Leah and Matthew, as well as her six great-grandchildren, Rhys, Kendall, Dana, Kyle, Elaina and Dylan.
Besides her parents, Mae was predeceased by her first husband, George Chiasson; her second husband, Arnold Gouthro; her sister, Ellen Curtis; her brothers, Tom, Charlie, John Hugh, Robert Day, as well as an infant boy.
The family wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Northside Guest Home, especially the staff of Joseph Hall, who definitely became her extended family. Their kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.
There will be no visitation and cremation has taken place by request.
A funeral mass for Mae will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating, with reception to follow in the Bras d’Or Hall. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
