Bert Manuel passed from this world on April 23rd, 2018. The last of his generation, he was born in Salt Pond (Embree), Notre Dame Bay, in 1927. Bert is predeceased by his mother, his father, five brothers, and two sisters. Leaving to remember Bert are his loving wife, Jean, of 68 years, currently residing at Agnes Pratt Home, his sons Vernon (Anne), Brian (Donna), Robert (Robin) and Peter (Cathy), all in the St. John's area, and daughter Cynthia (Ron) of Nova Scotia, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Until his final days, Bert kept up with current events and could hold his own in a lively conversation on any number of topics - international politics, the latest Blue Jays scores, or his own experiences growing up in Notre Dame Bay.
Bert will be remembered by those who loved him as a caring man with an inventive mind and a creative spirit. He was a skilled storyteller, with an extraordinary memory for detail. His family are thankful that many of his recollections are compiled in a memoir created in recent years. Bert had an entrepreneurial drive, starting several businesses during his lifetime. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1, and served with the Canadian Legion War Services in the 1940s. A man of many talents, Bert gave so much to his family and his community. The Manuel family extends great thanks to the caring people at Ruby Manor, St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, Bert's family physician Dr. D.R. Chaulk and the Palliative Care Unit at the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre. Visitation will be held at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 from 7pm-9pm. A service of celebration will be held at Barrett`s Chapel on Thursday, April 26th at 1pm followed by a reception in Barrett`s Reception Lounge.
