Francis 'Mugsy' Joseph Groves

Born In: New Waterford, Nova Scotia

Passed in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia
Passed on: April 21st, 2018

Francis “Mugsy” Joseph Groves, 73, Sydney Mines, passed away Saturday April 21, 2018 at The Northside General Hospital after a brief illness.
Mugsy was born in New Waterford, but moved to Sydney Mines to work in The Princess and Prince Collieries. He retired in 1993 after 27 years of service.
Mugsy was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He made many friends over the years and always was surrounded by his fishing buddies. Other fishing enthusiasts would often drop by the house to ask advice on fishing such as, “What kinds of fish are running? Where are the best fishing spots? What bait or fly should be used?” This was one of his great talents. He would sometimes stop the car and pull over to the side of the highway to point out deer in a field, hundreds of yards away, which we could only see in due time. Mugsy and Sis could often be found “on the lot” having coffee and socializing. Mugsy also enjoyed a good game of cards, a good drink, laughter and telling jokes. He always had a joke, trick or funny story up his sleeve. Although affection was not always easy for him to show, he very much loved his children, was proud of their accomplishments and happy they are genuinely good people.
Francis leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Carolyn (Tobin) who has been by his side constantly. Also left behind are his children, daughter, Wendy Boyd (Rannie) Sydney Mines; son, Jody (Tracy) Sydney Mines and son, Jason (Helen) Sydney River; sister, Theresa Doolan (Sydney); brother-in-law, Joe Tobin (Isabel) Sydney Mines; nephew, Louis Cann (Ester). Also left behind are grandchildren, Rene Boyd, Mason Groves, Logan Groves, Kody Groves and one great-grandchild, Brielle Rose McBurnie.
Also, sister-in-law, Lorna Cann (deceased) who loved Mugsy dearly. Thanks to special friend, Billy Ford for their adventures and being a great friend.
At Francis’ request, there will be no public services and cremation has taken place. He loved this Island for all her beauty, but the home in his heart was Little Narrows and The Bras D’Or Lakes, which will be his final resting place.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
