Dougald Allan MacFarlane

Dougald Allan MacFarlane, age 93 of Halifax Nova Scotia, passed away April 24, 2018 at Hants Community Hospital. Born in Southwest Margaree Cape Breton, Dougald was the son of John Alex MacFarlane and Mary Ann Gillis.
He joined the RCAF and was honorably discharged in 1945, after which he attended Saint Francis Xavier University, graduating in 1948 with a B.A. and in 1949 with a B.Ed. In 1951 he earned an M.A. Economics at McGill University. In the 1960s, he earned a PhD in Economics at University of Washington, Seattle. He taught at the University of Washington, at Notre Dame, for the United Nations FAO in South Korea, University of California San Jose, Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, and St. Francis Xavier University. He then worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans until his retirement.
He had a great love of opera music and his Gaelic heritage, a passion he shared with his dear cousin and friend Margaret Gillis.
He worked tirelessly for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and for the wellbeing of refugees, making sure many were able to live, work, and obtain permanent residency in Canada.
He is survived by his sister, Sr. Catherine MacFarlane; children, Jon-Alex (Catriona) and Andrew (Cheryl Verville) MacFarlane, and Monique (Marty Crouse) MacFarlane Conrad, and their mother, Lise Bertrand, his former wife and great friend. He was a loving and joyful grandfather to Aidan, Alyson, Fiona, Jack, Owen, and Sophia.
He is predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Janet, Hugh, Mary, Margaret, Douglas and Malcolm, and his wife, Margaret Brackett.
The MacFarlane family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Valerie Ross, Dr. Catherine Smith, and the nursing staff of Unit 200 at Hants Community Hospital for their expert care and kindness, as well as to the staff at Aberdeen Hall who always looked out for him.
Visitation will occur Sunday, April 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Snow’s Funeral Home on Lacewood Dr., and the funeral will take place at St. Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr. in Halifax on Monday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. with reception to follow. Interment will take place the following day at St. Joseph’s Parish in Southwest Margaree.
