Fenella died on April 25, 2018, in Baddeck at the age of 79.
She was born in Hong Kong and spent her youth and early adulthood in and around Edinburgh, Scotland. She studied at the University of St. Andrews and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History (with Honours). Her love of the outdoors began at university in Scotland where she was an avid climber and hill walker. After university, she trained as a teacher and then spent a year in Montreal teaching and road-tripping across Canada. Her teaching career took her to Cargilfield School, a Scottish boarding school for boys. Her love of little boys, dogs, and other lively animals was legendary. She emigrated to Canada in the late 1970's and spent many years as a goatherd and accountant on a farm in Quebec, where she met the love of her life, Bill Nicholson. Bill and Fenella moved to North Shore, Cape Breton, NS in 1990 and spent a happy life together, surrounded by the best friends anyone could have, chickens, geese and flocks of well-fed wild birds.
In Canada, Fenella is survived by her husband, Bill; stepdaughters, Anne (Arne Moore) and Sue (Murray Journeay) and their children, Sarah and Daniel Moore, Robyn and John Hooper. In the UK she is survived by her sister, Gillian Johnstone and the children of her late sister, Bridget Wedderburn (Pete, Chris, Joanna and Rebecca). In New Zealand, she is survived by the wife, (Kerry) and children of her late brother, Gavin Johnstone (Anna, Hugh, Fiona and Pippa).
Funeral service will be held at St. Ann's Bay United Church on May 5th at 11 a.m. with Rev Diane Kempt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. Ann's Bay United Church.
