We regret to announce the peaceful passing of David Lawrence Balah, 62, on Monday, May 7, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital. Born in North Sydney on August 10, 1955, David was the son of the late Lloyd and Wilma (Gillis) Balah.
David was a graduate of Memorial High School, Sydney Mines. He worked in silviculture throughout Cape Breton County. David enjoyed fishing, fly tying and hunting. He possessed a deep understanding and respect for nature. He was a talented guitarist who shared his gift with his family and friends. He enjoyed many happy years with the Boutilier family in Margaree and Beaver Cove. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
David was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Wilma Balah; his father-in-law, Garfield Boutilier, Little Pond, and brother-in-law, Jed McMullin.
David is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-two years, Nancy (Boutilier) Balah; his sons, Josh Balah (Jeanine and her daughter Layla), Jordan Balah, and cherished grandson, William; his brothers and sisters, Theresa (Alan) MacLeod, Sydney, Lloyd, Sydney, Cathy (Daniel Fraser), Alder Point, Helen (Joe) Felstein, Gerard (Patricia), Rosanne, all of Newmarket, Ontario, Martin (Kathy), St. Catherine’s and Noreen (Steve) Stewart, Aylmer, Quebec. David is also survived by his mother-in-law, Sarah Boutilier; sisters-in-law, Donna Coady, Debbie (Sandy Jardine), Marcy (Billy Unsworth), Wendy (Carl), Irene (Les Ferguson), Cindy (Greg LeBlanc), and brothers-in-law, Gary (Cynthia) Boutilier and Paul (Gayle) Boutilier.
David will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank the nursing and medical staff at the Northside General Hospital, for their exceptional care. A special thank you to Dr. Peter Poulos who has served as David’s devoted physician for many years.
Visitation for David will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
