Alfred "Alfie" LeDrew

Alfred "Alfie" LeDrew

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Alfred Verner “Alfie” LeDrew, announce his passing on Thursday, May 10, 2018, after a brief stay in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney on August 31, 1944, he was the son of the late Alexander and Delina (Liney) LeDrew.
Surviving is his wife of 46 years, Sharon (Dodson); daughters, Laura (Kyle) Phillipo, Westmount and Gina (Kirk) Rennie, Reserve Mines; brother, Greig (Ann Marie) LeDrew, Coxheath; granddaughters, Gracie, Emily, Katie Phillipo and Hannah and Lilly Rennie and many extended family members.
Alfie was predeceased by his grandson, Alexander Joseph Rennie, son of Gina and Kirk.
Standing 6'4", Alfie had a towering presence and a personality to which people were drawn. He loved to chat with his many friends and could sometimes be found at the local coffee shops discussing all the latest news. More recently, he would have coffee at home with some of his closest friends. Alfie always said, “if you get through life with a few real, true friends, you are extremely lucky.” He certainly had those kinds of friends. Alfie had a great smile and loved having a few good laughs. Always quick with a joke, he had a saying for everything, a great memory and could recite a poem or story at a moment’s notice. Alfie was, as he would say, “A jack of all trades, master of none.” He could build and fix anything. To say he had a sharp mind was an understatement. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do, if he set his mind to it and he took great pride in a job well done. Alfie was always willing to lend a helping hand and loved to be busy. His favorite place to spend his time was in Ben Eoin at the bungalow. Alfie would wish the winter months away so that he could spend time watching his granddaughters swim and play on the beach. Family dinners and drinks on the beach, after a little bit of work in the morning, made life worth living. Spy glasses in hand, watching for sailboats, as he sat under the umbrella taking in all of life’s pleasures, was how he spent his summer days.
Alfie was an active member of Sydney Masonic Lodge #84, Cape Breton Shrine Club and Philae Shrine Club in Halifax. He was a longtime former member of ROJ.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Monday, May 14 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
Memorials in his memory can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, the Cape Breton Cancer Care Fund or the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Alfie would recite the following excerpt from Lewis Carroll’s “The Walrus and the Carpenter” on many occasions.
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes and ships and sealing-wax
Of cabbages and kings
And why the sea is boiling hot
And whether pigs have wings.”
