David Blackmore

Passed in: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Passed on: April 30th, 2018

Passed away peacefully at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on Monday, April 30, 2018, David Walter Blackmore in his 82nd year. At his bedside was his dear companion and partner, Barbara (nee Andrews) Wood, whose life he shared for the last 16 years. David had been in ill health for the last year or so, and in spite of his determination to regain wellness and strength, his heart was not up to the task. David was the firstborn child of Walter Blackmore and Lucy (Griffin) Blackmore of Grand Falls-Windsor, where he was born in 1936. He attended Notre Dame Academy and graduated from Ryerson University in 1959, whereupon he joined the family business, Blackmore Printing Co. Ltd. He retired from Flexo-Pak in Grand Falls-Windsor, a company he had partnered with his brother Anthony following the sale of the original family business. Dave eventually moved to St. John's where he lived until his death. Dave was regarded by his family and friends as a very kind, generous man, knowledgeable about many things, collector of family trivia, the cousin who kept up with everyone as they moved out of the family seat of Grand Falls-Windsor and settled in places near and far, and raised their families, the uncle who always acknowledged every milestone and accomplishment of his much-loved nephews and nieces. His memories of growing up in central Newfoundland provided him with stories, anecdotes and observations which became part of the lore he shared with his friends and family. One of Dave's gifts was his ability to be a good listener, and as such he was welcomed into the lives of many diverse people. A man of a deep faith born in childhood and matured in later life, David and Barbara lived their Catholic faith and worshipped at St. Teresa's Parish, Mundy Pond, where they felt welcomed and at home. As a resident of Cambridge Estates, and later of the Miller Centre, Dave was a friend and colleague who endeavored to make life a little brighter. Sharing their grief with Barbara today are Dave's siblings Anthony (Hap), wife Rosalie and their children John (Kellie), Christopher (Shelley), Andrew (Karen) and Paul (Angeline) and their children, Dave's grand-nephews and grand-nieces: Amanda, Jason, Melissa, Nathan, Alexandra and Anthony; Judy Brockie, husband Gerry and their son, Ian (Pam Coristine); sister-in-law Sheila Kelly-Blackmore (widow of Martin, d. 2008); Eleanor Jones and her children Megan (Clifton Drew) and John (children Olive and Martin Jones); Brendan and his daughters Lucy and Sarah Blackmore, and their mother Eileen Dunphy. In addition, there are the many cousins of the Blackmore, Griffin and Harvey families of Grand Falls-Windsor, as well as the Thomey cousins in the US. Mourning their loss as well, are Barbara's children: Mark and his sons Levi and Isaac Hansen; John (Lisa) and sons Michael (Melanie) and Corey (Vanessa) Wood; Paul (Leona); Gerald (Valerie) daughter Janel and son Justin Wood; Robert (Jacqueline) and their children Riley, Julia and Sarah Wood. As a final act of generosity, David has gifted his body to MUN Medical Science, so there will not be a visitation or funeral at this time. However, the family plans to have a Celebration and Thanksgiving service at St. Teresa's Parish, Mundy Pond on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 9:30 am. In David's memory, donations may be made to St. Teresa's Parish 120 Mundy Pond Rd., St. John's, NL A1E 1V1 or a charity of one's choice. Rest in peace kind and gentle soul, David.
