Mary Bernetta ‘Nettie’ Harrietha

Mary Bernetta ‘Nettie’ Harrietha

Passed on: June 16th, 2018

It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our wonderful Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother Nettie Harrietha, on June 16, 2018 at the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Born June 21, 1934, Nettie was the daughter of the late Harry Erickson and Anne (McCready) Erickson of Point Aconi.
Nettie has been married to her loving husband, Michael (Mick) Harrietha, for 64 years. Together they lived in Mill Creek, never to move to another home. In her earlier years, Mom worked as a teacher in Big Harbour and after marrying stayed home to raise her eight children. Mom returned to the workforce as a cleaner at Dr. T.L. Sullivan Jr. High until retirement. Mom cherished many memories of her co-workers with whom she worked with for many years.
Mom had the kindest heart and genuine soul, she was always doing for someone else. She was a true believer in what we needed in life rather than what we wanted. Mom asked for nothing and never complained about anything. She had a strong belief in her faith. Mom enjoyed evenings watching a hockey or ball game until the late hours with Dad and many family gatherings.
Nettie was a dedicated member of St. Joseph Parish, Bras d’Or where she not only regularly attended but was a volunteer for many years having served on the Parish Council and St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was an active member of the Point Aconi Community Development and Ladies Auxiliary where they hosted many weddings over the years including those of her own children. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling and spending time with their good friends Din and Mary (late).
Left to keep her memory alive is her devoted husband, Mick, who was also her main caregiver for the last five years; her sons, Brian (Colleen), David (Brenda), Gordie (Joanne), Ralph (Ann), Dale (Nancy) and daughters, Norma (Paul) Bishop and Gwen (Brent) Wadden. Nanny was also blessed and loved by her 14 grandchildren, Keith, Krista, Lynda, Alisha, Allison, Cory, Erica, Tyler, Natasha, Michael, Brandon, Bryanna, Colin and Graham. As well as ten great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Leia, Caleb, Hayden, Nathan, Keila, Cole, Maya, Eric, Rory and two more on the way.
Nettie is survived by her brother, Ernie (Nora) Erickson; sisters-in-law, Millie Erickson and Gonie Harrietha, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Cavelle; brother, Vince; youngest son, Keith, which was the family’s biggest hardship, and many special in-laws.
Thank you to Dr. Irina Ghenea, Dr. Laith Shimon and Dr. Brendan McCarville for your care and compassion as well as the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff on 4C, the An Cala Unit and the Hospice Society of the CBRH. Special thanks to Continuing Care and Cape Breton County Homemakers for making it possible for Mom to remain at home with ongoing love and care. To her dear friends, Frankie, Helen and Louise who visited frequently... Thank you!
Visitation for the late Nettie Harrietha will be held Monday (Today), June 18, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A Funeral Mass to celebrate her life will take place Tuesday, June 19 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Fr Peter MacLeod officiating. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or, with reception to follow in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.”
