Phyllis Margurite Hawkes

It is with great sadness that the family of Phyllis Margurite Hawkes (Nanny) age 93 of Amherst announce her passing on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 with family by her side, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Mary (Coolen) Lashkow. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Phyllis was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Horne; grandson Mark; 1 infant daughter; sister Valentine Findlay.
She was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br: 10 Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Golden Years club.
Phyllis’ career as a salesperson began at Margolians in Amherst and in 1977 she moved to Grande Prairie, AB where she worked at Zellers until her retirement in 1990. Her love for the ocean brought her back to her Nova Scotia roots, where she remained until her passing.
Nanny loved the challenge of a good game of crib and Yahtzee. Her greatest joy was spending precious time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. All were very dear to her heart.
She will be dearly missed by her daughters Sally (Ralph) Embree of Chapman Settlement and Karen Gouchie of Lethbridge, AB; son Michael (Jennifer) of Tyndal Rd; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; niece, Nancy Findlay (Gary); nephew, Jerry Findlay; as well as extended family.
Following Phyllis wishes cremation has taken place.
Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018, Father Craig Christenson officiating at 11:00 a.m. from Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 677-9906. Reception to follow in the funeral home.
Interment will take place in Baxter’s Cemetery, Lorneville.
Donations may be made in Phyllis’ memory to the Baxter Cemetery or charity of choice.
