It is with sadness we announce the sudden passing of Allen Lorne Jess, 77, on Friday, June 15, 2018 at his home in Sherwood Park, Alberta. He is survived by his daughter Laura Porter, son Ken (Julie) Jess and daughter Linda (Derek) Monk and grandchildren Amanda Jess and Graham Jess who brought him a great deal of joy. He is also survived by his sisters Alice Newcombe, Carol (Blair) Embree, Nancy (Roy) MacDonald and Eleanor (Dieter) Konrath and by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Fisk) Jess, parents Allen and Alma (Russell) Jess, second mother Mary (Fuller) Jess, sister Jane Fuller and brother-in-law Robert Newcombe. Allen studied for two years at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College then received his B.Sc. in Landscape Architecture from the Ontario Agricultural College. He was retired from his position of Landscape Architect for the City of Edmonton. One of his most significant accomplishments was designing the grounds of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller, Alberta. Allen had a long history in the Scouting program. He earned its two highest awards: King’s Scout and the Bushman’s Thong, a rare accomplishment, and was later a Cub Scout leader in Sherwood Park. He had a passion for history and genealogy which had him traveling throughout North America searching out Jess and Payzant relatives. There were also frequent trips home to Nova Scotia to visit his family. When he was home he also made a point of attending the Wolfville High School reunions and the monthly luncheons of his class. The funeral service was held on Monday, June 25th at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Sherwood Park. Donations in memory may be made to Sunken Lake Scout Camp, c/o Scouts Canada, 84 Thorne Ave, Dartmouth, NS B3B 1Y5 or to a charity of one’s choice.
