It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, Sarah Alma (Sampson) Pyke on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Sarah was born June 29, 1933 in Lower L’Ardoise, Cape Breton to Barnaby and Margaret (Peters) Sampson.
At one time she was employed with Sacred Heart Parish, the Isle Royal Hotel, Tropicana Restaurant and for many years at the Holiday Inn, Sydney.
Sarah is survived by her children, Valerie (Donald) Penny, David (Joanne) Pyke, Blenos (Gena) Pyke and Marsha (Gordon) Walker. She is also survived by her sisters, Anne Marie Desveaux, Janet (Kevin) MacDonald, Mary (David) Campbell, Doris (Ralph) Allen, and brother, Napoleon (Shirley) Sampson. She is survived by 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Sarah was pre-deceased by her husband, Alvin; her daughter, Darlene, and a daughter, Linda, in infancy; her sisters, Laura Pottie, Evelyn Bonaparte, Kay Pottie, Rose MacLean, Marie Mombourquette; brother, Martin Sampson, and two brothers in infancy.
Sarah has been a long-time member of the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church. She was actively involved with the church council, League of Mercy and Home League. She was a member of the Sydney Pensioner’s Club and a past Vice-president of Club 55. At both clubs Sarah was also very active in two dart leagues and monthly socials. As a resident of the Argyle Street complex Sarah advocated for various causes on behalf of seniors. Through these numerous community activities she made many friends and acquaintances over the years. Sarah’s family was everything to her. She loved them dearly and showed her affection by preparing countless meals, sending cards or gifts to mark special occasions and always making them laugh with her quick wit. Sarah treasured gatherings with her family and over the years took the lead to organize showers, weddings, anniversary celebrations and parties – you knew she would always get the job done.
Visitation for Sarah will be held 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A celebration of her life will be held at the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church, 55 Inglis St., Sydney on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 11 a.m. A reception to follow in the church hall.
