It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon Albert Harvey on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, in the Palliative Care, An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short battle with cancer.
Born July 3, 1934, in George’s River, he was the son of the late Alexander and Jessie (MacDonald) Harvey.
Gordon served 15 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, before starting his career with Cape Breton Regional Housing Authority, where he dedicated 25 years. Prior to retirement, Gordon launched Harvey Tours, which he owned & operated for 29 years serving seniors of Cape Breton while promoting an active lifestyle. Gordon devoted his free time to helping others and was involved in several charitable groups including the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Paws Mart. He believed, “You only get one chance to make a first impression and a stranger was a friend he hadn’t met yet.”
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia (Matheson); daughters, Dianne Harvey and Florence (Donald) MacPherson; foster son, Ronald Francis; granddaughters, Courtney (Matthew) Debison, Calgary, Alta., Stephanie (Tylor) Mackinnon, Riverview, NB and Melissa MacPherson; great-grandchildren, Alia, Cara, Bryson, Ethan, Cohen and Hayden; aunt, Dorothy MacDonald; as well as many friends and family who sat by his bedside for hours bringing him comfort in his final days.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, John Gordon and daughter, Joan “Betty” Clarke; great-grandson, Lincoln; sister, Florence; and brother, Eldon.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Cabot St., on Monday, July 23 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon’s memory may be made to the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
