BLACK, Bernice Estella – Age 99 and a half years, of Middleton, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. Born on December 30, 1918, on Tancook Island, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Olive (Young) Levy. Mom was very active in the communities where she lived. Being born in a farmer’s home, she worked alongside of her family in the fields while growing up. Later she went to the city of Halifax working in different and difficult jobs and did very well. Wherever she lived, she attended and was an active member of the Baptist church in her area. She was involved in music, starting at 14 years of age playing the organ and leading the choir. In other churches she sang in the choir. She was also interested in missions and participated on the executive of the ABW/WMS mission’s societies in various churches. She and her husband, Charles, were members of the Contemporary Club. As a member of the Wilmot Garden Club she entered many flowers which won awards. With her expertise in baking, she won many ribbons from various exhibitions. Mom also is the last living member of the Orf Band. Although she attended church and participated in activities, there was something missing. That was a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She made that commitment in opening the door and receiving by faith the Lord Jesus into her heart. God loved her and guided her through life. Even through the dark days at the end, His presence and peace presided over her. Bernice was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughter, Marie Stevens, Middleton; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Charles Black; sisters, Edna (Lawrence) Landry and Sue (Pete) Wilson; brothers, Richard (Goldie) Levy, and Arthur (Jean) Levy. Visitation took place from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 18 in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, 902-825-3448, from where the funeral service followed by a reception took place at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 19. Rev. Julia Howard officiating, with interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in her memory may be made to Wilmot Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Victorian Order of Nurses, Annapolis Valley Branch or to your favourite charity.
