Sadie (Burton) Burt
Passed on: July 23rd, 2018
It is with sorrow we announce the unexpected death of Sadie Burt, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, on Monday, July 23, 2018, at the Northside General Hospital. She died just days after celebrating her 97th birthday with her family.
Born in Anderson’s Cove, NL, on July 18, 1921, Sadie was the daughter of her beloved parents, Rebecca (Bond) and Thomas Burton. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney and a past member of the Altar Guild and Married Couples Association. Sadie was an avid knitter and excellent baker and she loved doing both for her family who were most important to her. She lived life to its fullest right up until her final moments. She had a great sense of humour and she knew what was best for her children even before they did. First and foremost Sadie was a proud Newfoundlander.
She is survived by her children, Evelyn (Doug) Schaller, Sydney Forks, Margaret (Don) Cowan, London, ON, George (Donna) Burt, Bras d’Or, Susan (Fred) Rahey, Halifax, Tom Burt, Halifax, and daughter-in-law, Margaret. She is lovingly survived by her eleven grandchildren, Christine Elliott, Ian and Colin Cowan, Vaughn, Leah and Lina Burt, Rebecca and Stephen Rahey and Michael, Daniel and Katherine Burt; six great-grandchildren, Gemma, Ocean, Evan, Ella, Kinsley and Kaelyn. Also surviving is her sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Eddie Bruce; her special niece, Janie Riggs in Grand Bank, NL and many other nieces and nephews across Canada.
Sadie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her much loved husband of 73 years, George S. Burt; her parents; her sisters, Emily Melloy, Janie Piercey, Evelyn Rodgers, Dora Dominix and Elsie Munster; her brothers, James, Fred, Tom and Calvin Burton, and son-in-law, Michael Elliott.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Patrick O’Grady for the care and compassion shown to both Sadie and George over the years. Also a very special thank you to Valerie and Jimmy Nelson whose loving care allowed our mother to remain in her home as she wished.
Visitation for Sadie will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday (today) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. John Anglican Church Fund or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
