John William “Johnny” Harper

It's with our heaviest hearts that we announce the loss of our legend, our anchor John William "Johnny" Harper. He passed peacefully during the evening of July 26th, 2018 surrounded by his soul mate (Janice Walsh) and daughters (Faron Harper, Vanessa Harper and Megan Harper) in the Palliative Care Ward at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, Nova Scotia. Born in Inverness on June 13, 1949, he was a son of the late Joe and Elizabeth (Larade) Harper. Johnny was an active horseman in his younger years eventually making the transition from horseman to Maritime Racing Official over 40 years ago. He was well known around the Maritime Racing Circuit for his fairness and ability to listen, these qualities led him into the Ontario Racing Commission (2002) where he worked as a Presiding Judge until his retirement in 2010. Before moving to Ontario to accept a full-time position with the Ontario Racing Commission he owned and operated Harper Irving Gas Stop located at Valley Crossroads. This was John's last position and title with Irving Oil after over 25 years with the company. He later (2016) moved back to Nova Scotia and settled back in Truro to be closer to family. John would encourage you to hang onto the memories filled with great food, lots of it, card games, horse racing, family and friends.
