James Albert Munves was born on March 23, 1922, in New York City, New York, USA to Alexander A. Munves and Helen Schreiber Munves and died on August 31, 2018 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada at the age of 96. He was a graduate of Brown University. During the Second World War, Mr. Munves served in the US Army with honor, earning a Purple Heart. For many years in New York City, he was a member of Kairos, the activist antiwar community. He was a freelance writer whose research led him around the globe, living in North and South America, Mexico, both coasts of the United States, Europe and Canada. The main body of his published work consists of several nonfiction books for young readers. He moved to Prince Edward Island, Canada and founded the publishing house Bunim & Bannigan. On P.E.I. he continued advocacy for peace and public transportation, and along with his wife, Barbara, worked for preservation of the natural environment. They created a land trust donated to the Island Land Trust as their legacy contribution to Prince Edward Island. Mr. Munves was predeceased by his first wife, Sally Frowenfeld Broido. He is survived by his wife, Barbara P. Parsons Munves. He is also survived by his brother R. Peter Munves, his three daughters, Katherine (Pearlman), Emily (Chadbourne), and Margaret (Munves), four grandchildren, Jenny, Molly, and Liz Chadbourne, Louis Pearlman, a great granddaughter, Maybellene, and many friends on P.E.I. The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date. Completion of arrangements have been entrusted to the Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home.
