Mckay, Gervaise “Chook” Warren, age 87, of Brooklyn, Hants County, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth. Born on August 1, 1931, in Newport, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Raymond and Kathleen (Demmings) McKay. Chook’s most important role was being a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was adored by his grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Chook spent his entire working career as a Truck Driver; starting with his father’s company “McKay’s Transfer”, and then went on to work for various trucking companies. Chook was a founding member of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department in 1962. He took great pride serving as a Volunteer Fire Fighter and was acknowledged for his many years of service. Chook was an active member of the Fire Department Auxiliary. He was also awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal. Chook assisted with fundraising and building the first Newport District Rink and was a founding member of Newport Minor Hockey Association. He stayed an active member of Minor Hockey for many years, and took great pride in coaching his sons. Chook is survived by his children, Warren (Aggie) McKay, Tignish, PEI; Raymond McKay, Fort McMurray, Alberta; Todd (Sheila) McKay, Grand Pré; Jane (Brian) Corkum, Halifax; grandchildren, Shana-Lynn McKay (Chris Adshade), Tyler McKay, Denise (Josh) Reynolds, LeeAnn McKay (Maxime Vincent), Joseph McKay (Meghan Barrett), Alanna McKay, Connor McKay, Nathan McKay and David Corkum; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Hilburne “Tibby”; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Christine Margaret McKay (2015); his daughter-in-law, Beth Denise McKay (2013); brothers, Rudolph and James. Visitation was held 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Thursday, September 6, 2018, in the Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, B0N 2T0. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2018, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Henderson officiating. A private family Interment was held in St. James Anglican Parish Cemetery, Brooklyn, Hants County. Donations in memory of Chook may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
