McLELLAN, Joseph Henry - age 84 of Yarmouth, NS, passed away suddenly and peacefully, on September 2, 2018, surrounded by staff of The Meadows, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth, NS. Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Born in Burlington, NS, on January 6, 1934, he was the son of the late Bertram and Geneva (Blackburn) McLellan. Joe was a machinist by trade and apprenticed at the Halifax Dockyard. His trade led him into a varied career using his knowledge of his trade and his love of education. He spent the remainder of his career in the field of vocational education, first with the Department of Education as the Provincial Supervisor of Vocational Education evening classes and Coal Mining Education for the province of Nova Scotia. He then went on to become an administrator of Vocational Education, first in Prince Edward Island and then in Nova Scotia at the Burridge Campus, until his retirement. Joe, met the love of his life, Lily while working in Halifax and they wed in 1955. Joe and Lily spent 62 happy years together and raised a family of four girls. Joe enjoyed sailing, reading, music, golfing, skiing, playing bridge, cooking and entertaining, making wine and traveling the world with his former wife Lily. Joe's passion for a strong civil society was apparent through his giving of much of his spare time before and after his retirement, as a volunteer. He gave much time and leadership to the local Yarmouth YMCA and Rotary Club, as well as providing time and energy at the national and international level for both organizations. Joe was very interested in the health of Nova Scotians which was evidenced through his active participation on the Yarmouth Hospital Board for many years and then on the board of the Licensed Practical Nurses Association of Nova Scotia. During his time on the LPN Board, he played a strong leadership role in the legislation that brought about self-regulation for Licensed Practical Nurses in Nova Scotia. Joe had a strong faith and was an active member of The United Church of Canada and loved his Beacon United Church Community. Joe is survived by his daughters, Heather (Gary) Christian, Windsor, NS; Joanne (Albert) LeBlanc, Grosses Coques, NS; Barbara (Nabil) Abboud, New Edinburgh, NS; Krista (Todd) Norton, Ottawa, ON; grandchildren, Danielle, Yassamine, Owen, Saneea, Scott, Mustafa, Robert, Rebecca and Layla; and great grandchildren, Breanna, Brady, L.J., Rosie, Ronan and Lachlan. Joe was predeceased by his parents Bertram and Geneva (Blackburn) McLellan, his wife Lily (Taylor) McLellan, his brother John (Jack) DeAngelis and his grandson Leopold LeBlanc. Special thanks to The Berkeley family staff, to Dr. Howard Conter and to the staff of The Meadows, who embraced our dear dad in the last months of his life, and truly made him feel at home. Their daily loving support meant the world to both our father and family. There will be a family celebration of his life at a later date.
