The passing of Shirley Grace Troop occurred at Cumberland Regional Hospital, Amherst, N.S. on September 25, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born on January 12, 1933, in Amherst, N.S. she was the daughter of the late Creighton and Margaret (Comeau) Welch. As a young girl she was a tap dancer and also entertained the troops at Debert as a majorette for the Amherst Legion Band along with two other majorettes, Yvonne Cormier and Connie White. She graduated from St Charles High School and then attended St Charles Commercial School. She worked at Abrahams Clothing Store and then worked as a receptionist at the Medical Centre in Amherst. As a stay at home Mom, Shirley was active in the community as a door to door canvasser for many charitable organizations. She was chosen as a Human Rights Activist for the Town of Amherst. Shirley was a faithful member of the Nativity of Our Lady Roman Catholic Church as well as the CWL (45 year pin) in Amherst for many years. She was always there with a willing hand. Shirley was a choir member and especially enjoyed singing at various places around the community. Shirley loved music of all kinds and loved to dance as well. Shirley loved remembering her years with Ivan and her boys at Jackson’s Point and the many fishing trips they went on, as well as all of the memories and friends they made in their 48 years together. Shirley enjoyed watching all forms of sports on television but vigorously watched Curling, Hockey (Go, Sidney), Bowling, Skating and the Olympics, playing cards with her friends in the community and singing. In 2010 she started a new life at White Birches where she loved to play cards and even tried crafts. She spent the last seven months of her life at Gables Lodge where she also received excellent, and loving care. Both facilities were very special to her. Shirley is survived by her sons Stephen Troop (Agnes Douglass) of Amherst and Michael Troop of Toronto, one sister, Delores McCarthy of Toronto and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Karen Myall of Toronto and special friend Margie McCormack (Roger Boucher) of Shediac River, N.B., Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Ivan Beal Troop, brothers, Howard and Carl and sisters, Marie Taylor and Eileen Pickles. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 5 – 8 p.m. with parish prayers at 7 p.m. as well as visitation on Monday from 1 p.m. until time of departure all at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 667-9906. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 2 p.m., Father Craig Christenson officiating. Shirley will be laid to rest beside her husband, Ivan in the Amherst Cemetery. Family flowers only.
