It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of David Albert “Ross” Smith, C2RC/RM/CT,CD, formerly of Centreville, New Minas, Dartmouth and most recently Shannex Blomidon Court Nursing Home in Greenwich, on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the age of 81. Born in St. Catharine’s, Ontario, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Helen (Gilmore) Smith. Ross moved to the Annapolis Valley in the early 1980s after retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for 25 years. He sailed on many ships and wanted to see the world, serving on the Cornwallis, Lanark Crescent, Saguenay, Cape Scott, Columbus, Chaudiere, Saskatchewan, Skeena and lastly HMCS Iroquois. He was stationed at Stadacona, Albro Lake and Mill Cove. Post retirement, employment saw him at Eyretechnics Dartmouth, Autoport, Valley Communications, Kentville, Sears, New Minas and at Acadia University. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Delores (McGrath); his second wife, Verna (Aalders); sister, Joyce; brother, Allan and step-grandson, Bobby Thompson. Ross is survived by sons, Dave (Annette), Middleton; Daryll (Lori), Kitchener, Ontario; step-daughters, Sherry (Blaine) Fisher, Lakelands; Janet Poehl (Tom Morton), Halls Harbour; step-son, Dana Poehl, Steam Mill; grandchildren, Rachael and Marcus, both of Kitchener, Ontario; Matthew, Ottawa, Ontario; Derek, Middleton; step-grandchildren, Colin (Terri) Mosher, Shanghai, China; Crysta Mosher (Chad Cummings), Aurora, Ontario; David Thompson, California and sister, Dorothy (Philip) Krafve, St. Catharines, Ontario. Ross enjoyed sports and was a jack of all trades and a master of none. He was always smiling and enjoyed serving with his peers in the Navy. He had many friends and was kind to everyone. He will be sadly missed by all. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Kings County SPCA or Shannex Blomidon Court Nursing Home, Greenwich. A sincere thank you to all the staff of Shannex Blomidon Court who took such amazing care of both Verna and Ross during their time of need.
