Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia
Passed on: January 19th, 2019

With broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather at the age of 67. He left us on January 18, 2019, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Gary was born in North Sydney on June 20, 1951 to the late Senator Bob and Mary (King) Muir.
He retired six years ago from Public Works Canada after thirty years, beginning his career in Port Hawkesbury and finishing in Sydney. His days after that were spent helping to build our home in Groves Point, then continuing with daily projects to enhance the property he loved.
He had a wide and varied collection of interests, including reading, history, sports, nature, boating, fishing, cars, motorcycles and building projects, to name only a few. He loved good conversation and could entertain young and old with his stories and endearing sense of humour. Gary was often heard saying “nothing is more important than the family unit”.
He is survived by his wife of forty- two years, Bev (MacDonald); son, Sandy (Sara Beth Unsworth) and daughter, Lindsey (Colin MacKinnon). He was “Poppy Gar” to his cherished grandchildren, Jake and Ethan Muir and Ella MacKinnon. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth (Ken McKinnon) and brother, Bobby (Gail Ervin); as well as numerous nieces and nephews whose company he always enjoyed. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Doug and Muriel MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place and ashes will be scattered in the Bras d’Or Lakes at his “happy place” Groves Point. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Northern Yacht Club, Seaview Drive, North Sydney on Friday, January 25 at 7 p.m. Friends are invited to share memories and stories at 8 p.m., followed by some of Gary’s favourite music.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cape Breton Cancer Center are suggested.
Our family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr.’s Liam Orrell, Wissam Saliba and the Palliative Care team for their wonderful care and support. We will always be grateful to Manager Debbie Neville and her team on 4D for their outstanding kindness, compassion and competence.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
