Roma Jean Francis

Roma Jean (MacKay) Francis, Charlottetown and formerly of Fortune Bridge, passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on February 3, 2019, in her 87th year. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Lorne, children Rory (Ann), Vicki (Martha), and Randy (Wendy) and six grandchildren Adam, Graeme (Amra), Carmen (Dylan), Timothy, Jesse and Magie. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Lena) MacKay, brother-in-law John Francis (Gabby), sister-in-law Ethel MacEwen, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Robin, parents Cranford and Margaret (Peggy) MacKay, and sister-in-law Marina MacKay. Roma was born in Stanley Bridge and attended Prince of Wales College. She taught school in Springbrook and then started a long career with Matthew and MacLean’s in Souris. She also worked at the Souris Theatre at that time, where rumour has it she met her husband Lorne. Her second career was as Office Manager with the Souris Detachment of the RCMP, a job she loved. In the early years in Fortune, Roma was busy on weekends hosting weddings at the family business, the Wheel of Fortune Lodge. Roma gave to the community in many ways both in Fortune Bridge and then in Winsloe after she and Lorne retired. She was a life member of the PEI Women’s Institute and served on the Provincial Board. She was active in the United Church Women’s organizations at her churches and supported many charities. There were few community events that Roma was not baking for or serving. Roma enjoyed many athletic activities including skiing, skating, and bowling and was an ardent hockey fan (Go Leafs!). Most of all Roma was a kind, selfless, loving person to all her family and friends. Her kindness and sacrifice will be remembered. The funeral will be held at Winsloe United Church, at 1:00 pm, Friday, February 8. Visitation at the Belvedere Funeral Home Thursday, February 7, 2019, 2-4 pm and 7-9pm. Interment in the Bay Fortune United Church Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Roma can be made to Bay Fortune United Church Cemetery Fund. www.belvederefh.com
