MacLean, Wallace Harry - It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Wallace Harry MacLean of Merigomish, Pictou County on February 17, 2019. Born on July 17, 1940, at Whycocomagh, Inverness County, he was predeceased by his mother Lena Helen (MacLean) MacDonald and his step-father Alex MacDonald. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a resident of Merigomish for most of his life and he was proud to be a graduate of East Pictou Rural High School. He was also a graduate of the Nova Scotia Teachers College and St. Francis Xavier University where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Education Degree.
Wally thoroughly enjoyed his career as a Teacher and Principal. He commenced his career as an elementary Teacher and Principal at Thorburn and Linacy Schools. He subsequently taught mathematics at East Pictou Rural High until his retirement in 1994. He acted as a financial advisor to the Student Council of East Pictou and he served as past Treasurer of the East Pictou Educational Foundation. He was highly regarded by his students and his fellow teachers and will be remembered for his organizational skills, his wonderful sense of humour and his willingness to help.
Wally was an active member of his community. He was a founding member of the Merigomish and District Community Association, serving later as Fair Chairman and President. He gladly served as a volunteer assisting numerous groups.
In his personal life Wally enjoyed the adventure of travel, especially in Canada, with a great interest in the Eastern Arctic of the Northwest Territories. He travelled one summer near the North Pole and he was twice inducted into the North of 60 Chapter, Order of the Arctic Adventurers.
He had a life-long love of fishing and was a long- time member and director of the Eastern Angling Club. Wally was also a canoeing instructor and he spent many happy hours paddling rivers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
He was an avid gardener and a member of the Nova Scotia Beekeepers Association. He was an ardent reader with a keen interest in history. He deeply appreciated the time spent with friends, and he will always be remembered by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

At Wally’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A public graveside service will be held in Riverview Cemetery, Merigomish, with Rev. Gail Johnson-Murdock officiating at a date to be announced in the Spring.
