MAJOR WILLIAM “BRUCE” KNOWLES, of Yarmouth, NS, age 81, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2019 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital with family by his side. He was predeceased by his father, William Knowles, mother Muriel Knowles and infant sister, Venisa. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Belle (Devine) Knowles; daughter, Jody Churchill (Frank Cottreau); son, William Jeffrey Bruce Knowles (Donna); sisters, Lois Campsall (Wayne) of Ontario, Karlene Land of Yarmouth; brothers, Lance Knowles (NancyJane), Ontario, Larry Knowles (Yvonne) Canning, NS; grandchildren, Jennifer, Virginia, Grace, Corey, Katherine, Chantal, Michael and Will and 18 great grandchildren. Bruce grew up in Yarmouth, NS and started working at the age of 9 as a caddy. He joined the RCAF at the age of 18. He was a navigator on the Argus aircraft for many years and retired in 1983. He served as the Canadian Ambassador to US Airforce Base in Keflavic, Iceland from 1974 to 1976. Upon retirement he went on to complete his bucket list of jobs as lighthouse keeper, librarian and Radio D.J. at CJLS. He served on the YARC Board and Yarmouth County Museum board. He was a dedicated member of the Wesleyan Church of Yarmouth where he eagerly participated in many Living Christmas Tree performances and dramas. Most importantly Bruce was a true gentleman and wonderful father to his children, hero to his brothers and family man. Donations in memory can be made to the Salvation Army or Red Cross. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of 3 south at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital and Dr. Winston Wertlen who treated Bruce with such grace and dignity. Cremation has been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. There will be no funeral by request. A memorial service and celebration of life to be held at a later date.
