Margaret Mary Hickey

RIVERTON – Margaret Mary Hickey, 88, Riverton, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 in Valley View Villa, Riverton, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Montreal, Que., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hobbs) Saucier. Margaret will be remembered for her endless energy and love for life, embracing her creed to “live each day like it was your last”. She married her lifelong partner Frank in their native Montreal, April 29,1950. Arriving in Stellarton in 1961 and strangers to the community, Margaret immediately embraced her new home, becoming active in community events including leader of the Lourdes Girl Guide Troup, Chair of the local Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, worked with the Heat Fund and Lourdes Home and School Association and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She was an avid golfer, serving as President of the Ladies Division, Abercrombie Golf Club. Her commitment to physical fitness was best shown in her time spent working with preschoolers at the YM/YWCA and in recent years teaching a senior aerobics program at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Admired for her zest for life, it was well displayed when members of her great granddaughter’s Pee Wee hockey team, Subway Selects, made her an honorary member. She received a team sweater with the monogram ‘GG’, a designation her great- grandchildren lovingly called her. On receiving the honor Margaret commented, “this is the best day of my life”. Margaret and Frank spent many winters in Largo, Florida where they were involved with a local theatre group. She loved music, enjoying an eclectic variety, including Celtic, which she considered to be among her favorites. Among her many travel destinations were memorable trips with Frank to Ireland. Margaret was quiet and thoughtful when interacting with people whatever the subject of conversation. She was interested and interesting. Loved and admired by so many friends and family, her five great-grandchildren will especially miss their ‘GG’. Surviving are her husband Frank; daughters, Susan; Brenda; grandchildren, Patrick (Donna) Hickey, Westville; Erin (Howie) Young, Mountville; Richard (Hannah Singer) Lann, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Parker; Jenna; Sam; Allister; Anthony. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Janet in infancy. A Celebration of Life will be held, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 9, 2019 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. www.pkmacdonald.ca
Lovingly submitted by her family
