Donald Fraser Ross

Born: July 12th, 1955

Passed on: March 24th, 2019

With broken hearts, we announce our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at home on March 24, 2019 surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Donald was born on July 12, 1955 in Sydney, NS. He was the proud son of the late Garnet Allison Ross, Little Narrows, NS, and Annie May Ross (Ferguson), Sydney, NS.
Like his father, Donald began his career with CN Rail in Sydney at the age of 19 as a Carman and advanced through the ranks holding head office and supervisory positions over the next 20 years across Canada. He joined the Transportation Safety Board in 1994 as a Safety Investigator. Donald dedicated his professional career to improving safety standards within the railway industry. As a Senior Investigator, he was proud of his team’s work to help bring about significant changes to rail safety regulations. His compassionate and professional leadership, even in the most stressful situations, earned him the respect and appreciation of his peers.
Donald’s investigative and curious mind led him to a life-long fascination with genealogy, including President of Clan Ross of Canada, and travelling to Scotland exploring his Ross lineage. His genuine interest in people and history naturally led him to help others discover their own ancestral roots.
The greatest loves of Don’s life were his wife Caroline and their family. Their children and grandchildren always felt his love, support, and pride in everything they did. Don loved to laugh, share stories, catch up and reminisce with family and friends, especially at his favorite place, their bungalow at “The Points” in Cape Breton. Don’s love of life, warm hugs, and welcoming smiles will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Caroline Ross (Boudreau); daughters, Donna Ross (Dave) and Allison Harvey (Aaron); son, Kendall Ross (Lauren); his grandchildren, Bradyn, Mitchell, Connor, Kaitlyn, Emily, and Carson. He is also survived by his only brother, Gary Ross (Evelyn) and several brothers and sisters-in-law; as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial visitation will be held Friday March 29th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home Dartmouth, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, NS.
Funeral service will be held Sunday March 31st 2 p.m. at Westmount United Church, 15 MacLennan Dr., Sydney, NS.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Little Narrows Presbyterian Cemetery Society, PO Box 352, Whycocomagh, NS, B0E 3M0 or the QEII Foundation Brain Tumor Research Fund.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Adrienne Weeks and both the Neurological and Cancer Care teams at the QEII, the VON, as well as the Continuing Care team with special thanks to Shelley Petter. Thank you to all of Don’s family, friends, and colleagues who have shown so much love and support throughout his illness.
