He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Mabel Baird and his sister-in-law, Danno Baird.
Gordie will always be lovingly remembered for his intellect, kindness and fun.
He grew up on Water St. in Glace Bay, a neighbourhood teaming with activity and immigrants from all over. This gave the children an understanding of other nationalities that no education could.
In Highschool, his passion was cars and his love became Jean. He knew every turn in the road to Mira, where he loved diving off the Bridge and dancing at Kenwood.
His career in Industrial Instrumentation brought him to work at Seaboard and Lingan power plants. After his retirement he worked part time in the commissioning of new industrial plants. His trouble shooting abilities brought him great respect from his peers.
Gordie participated in a number of businesses in Glace Bay including; Real Estate, Fish Farming, Community Futures, Oceanside Assistance Group, Downtown Development, and was co-owner of Carmichael’s Family Clothing. He surrounded himself with a network of friends that constantly tried new projects.
Gordie was a member of Knox United Church and Tyrian Youth Lodge #45 in Glace Bay.
Second Only to his family the Boy Scout movement was the love of his life. From the freezing temperatures of Winter Camping at Camp Carter to the humid temperature of Australia he had experienced it all. He particularly loved riding the Cabot Trail with Queen Scouts where coaster brakes were the only option. As Regional Commissioner he had 450 adults and 2000 youths under his guidance. He held a Trainer III certificate and worked hard to continually encourage other leaders.
Gordie received National and International recognition for service during 3 World Scout Jamborees (Norway, Canada and Australia) and in 1992 was awarded the 125 Anniversary of Canada Confederation Medal.
In 1998 as a crewmember he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean on a 42 foot sail boat, as a result he became a full member of the Ocean Cruising Club of London UK.
In early 2000, Gordie and Jean retired to Baddeck. Gord loved discussions at Free Wheelers, singing in the choir at Greenwood Church, playing bridge with friends and spending his winters in Florida. Swimming, golfing and dancing were just a few of his favorite Florida activities with Jean.
Family and extended family was very important to him. His presence at family gatherings and major events was a pleasure for him to attend. Time spent with family at No 2, Mira and Baddeck always brought him great joy, deep friendships and great stories.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Genge, Dr. R. MacCormick, the Palliative care team of Dr. Ritter and his staff of Cathy and Paulette for their compassionate care. The Staff at both the Cancer Care center at the Regional Hospital as well as the Victoria County memorial hospital staff deserve sincere thanks from the family.
