Robert Carl “Robbie” Smith, 64, of Shelburne, passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, two months after a sudden diagnosis of Stage 4 liver cancer. Born on Oct. 28, 1954 in Manhattan, New York, USA, he was the son of the late Jessie Leona Smith and Vladimir “Frank” Prazak. The young family moved to Montreal, where they were surrounded by the rest of Leona’s family. In 1969, Leona and Robbie, along with the rest of the Smiths, moved back to Nova Scotia, where the family roots were, and lived “off the grid” in their distinctive Round House on the shores of Jordan Bay, Shelburne County.
Robbie Smith was music. A sensitive, thoughtful, kind and caring soul, he could hardly get through a night, a rehearsal or a sound check without another beautiful melody bubbling to the surface. Melodies came first, followed by a premise, and then his finely crafted lyrics completed the song. Robbie’s songs caught the attention of Roger Whittaker, who recorded four of them in the late 1970s. Robbie had a long career with his family, as a solo artist, and with many groups, before finding his vocal soulmate, Kathleen Glauser, and creating the duo, Naming the Twins, in 2008. Robbie and Kathleen released four Naming the Twins CDs and were actively touring until just before Robbie’s diagnosis in late December 2018.
Robbie was predeceased by his parents, of whom he was very proud. His mother was a classically trained vocalist, his father a chef and well-known Hockey Hall of Fame photographer. Robbie’s dad eventually remarried and had a son, Jason. As Robbie said, “There are no halves when it comes to brothers.” Jason and his wife, Keri, are parents to Robbie’s only nephew and niece, Jackson and Eden. Robbie was also predeceased by his uncle, Robert Smith, and is survived by his uncle, Carl Smith, and his aunt, Anne Smith, both of Shelburne.
In lieu of flowers or donations, Robbie would have requested that you sing a “Robbie song” in his memory. Individual, band or choir, all are welcome to take up the challenge.
