LAYMAN, Margaret Fernie (nee Shankland)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret on July 1, 2011. Margaret was born in Paisley, Scotland on April 21, 1925. She was predeceased by her parents William and Flora Shankland and her sister Flora Mc Laughlin. Beloved wife and best friend of Donald Layman for 66 years, she is also survived by her children Bill ( Lynda Holland) of La Ronge, Barbara (Jim Stewart) of Regina, and Mellisa (William Holden) of Edmonton; grandchildren Zane Layman and Fraser and Lauren Stewart; sister-in-law Lucille Layman; as well as nieces and nephews in Canada and cousins in Scotland. Margaret and Don met when he was stationed in Scotland while in the Royal Canadian Navy during WW2. They were married in Scotland and after the war Don was sent home on a destroyer but Margaret had to wait a year before she was able to get passage to Canada and make the long journey by ship and train to join Don in Regina. A few years later Don began working for and eventually became part owner of the Ford dealership in Prince Albert. They remained in Prince Albert for the next 45 years then retired to Saskatoon for 15 years and most recently they returned to Regina to College Park Retirement Residence to be closer to family. One of Margaret's greatest joys for the past 52 years was spending time at the family cottage at Emma Lake. On retirement she and Don made this their full time summer residence where they continued to have many wonderful times with family and friends. She was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flower gardens in their large yard in Prince Albert and at Emma Lake. Margaret was always an avid reader and very well informed. She enjoyed participating in discussions on world events. She could also often be found mulling over a crossword puzzle with one of her beloved dachshunds curled up beside her. Two of her passions were sewing and knitting. She sewed for herself and her daughters, even making her daughter's wedding dress. She kept the family supplied with many beautiful sweaters and mittens over the years. Margaret was also a very accomplished cook providing her family and friends with fantastic meals over the years. Sunday dinner was always in the dining room with the good china. A private cremation will take place and according to Margaret's wishes no formal funeral service will be held. A gathering for family and friends will be held at Emma Lake at a later date. In lieu of other tributes the family would appreciate donations to the Salvation Army, Box 51, Regina, SK S4P 2Z5.
