Sister Elizabeth Roth, formerly Sister Anthony Marie, 92, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, in the 70th year of her religious life.
Born in Bow Island, Alta., Sister Elizabeth was the third oldest of 10 children of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Schili) Roth.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on Sept. 30, 1938, pronounced her first vows on Aug. 15, 1940, and her perpetual profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1943.
After her profession of vows, Sister spent most of her life in ministry as supervisor in the dietary departments of various institutions operated by the congregation. In Nova Scotia, she served at St. Martha’s Convent, (St. FX University), St. Martha’s Hospital and Bethany. In Lethbridge, Alta., she ministered at St. Michael’s General Hospital, Martha Centre, and St. Monica Convent. She served also at St. Peter’s Hospital, Melville, Saskatchewan and Cardinal’s Residence, Toronto. In 1969, Sister obtained a diploma in Dietary Technology from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and in 1971 a certificate in Hospital Department Management from the Canadian Hospital Association. In 1999, she retired to the motherhouse and moved into Bethany’s Extended Care Unit in 2000, where she remained until her death.
Sister Elizabeth is survived by her sisters, Anna Karnbeitz, Lethbridge and Josephine Holton, Medicine Hat, Alta.; brothers, Andrew, Medicine Hat and Peter, Bow Island.
Besides her parents, Sister Elizabeth was predeceased by her sisters, Magdalena Lyczewski, Barbara Stoppler and Margaret Hnatiuk and brothers, George and Jack.
The remains will be resting at Bethany beginning Friday at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held that same evening at 7 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel.
