EIDT, DOUGLAS “DOUG” CONRAD BSA, MSA, PhD (biology) - The passing of Douglas Conrad Eidt of Keswick Ridge, NB, husband of Betty (Redden) Eidt, occurred on July 10, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on July 02, 1928 in Fergus, ON, he was the son of the late Cecil Conrad and Sara Amelia “Millie” (May) Eidt. He graduated from Kings County Academy, Kentville, NS in 1945. Doug undertook a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) at Nova Scotia Agriculture College (his favorite) and completed it at the University of Guelph. He undertook studies for his MSA at Guelph and completed it at the University of Toronto with a major in Entomology. He married Betty in 1951 and commenced work with the Canadian Forestry Service in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1952, the beginning of a fruitful 42 year career. Doug completed his PhD (biology) at the University of Saskatchewan in 1955 and then transferred to Fredericton, NB. Most of his projects were in research and writing scientific papers related to protecting the forest from harmful insects. He received many honours over the years. Doug loved his camp at Oromocto Lake, was a stamp collector, enjoyed gardening, was a naturalist and also loved genealogy. He belonged to the Men’s Breakfast Club of Keswick Ridge. His greatest achievement was balancing his professional life and love of family. His playful activities and numerous interests provided an environment and atmosphere treasured by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. For all of them, time with Doug was at once a learning experience and a treasure trove of fond memories. Doug is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years; five sons, Daniel (Helen), David (Andrea), Robert (Maggie), Christopher (Lori) and Matthew (Lyndsay); twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; sisters Virginia “Ginnie” Allen and Pat Denbow; brother Cecil Edward Eidt and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Wilfred Gerald Eidt.
Although there will be no visitation by request; a Celebration of Life Service will take place at Keswick Ridge United Church on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm with the Reverend Merrill Slipp officiating. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Chalmers Foundation or the charity of the donor’s choice. Please, family flowers only. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
“I was just searching the internet to check if there was any information on the Family Tree that Doud was working on and discovered his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. My Grandparents were Fred and Dorothy Eidt. ”
“Can anyone contact me to talk about my father's friendship with Doug? To just read now of Doug's passing is difficult for me. Doug was such a wonderful person to have kept my Dad's memory alive through his records. I wonder if he also wrote about Mert Stillwell?”
“Dear Betty and Family:
It was only this morning on returning to town that I learned, with shock, of your bereavement. At least Annette and I were able get to the service this afternoon, but regretably had to leave right afterwards without having had a chance to talk with you. Throughout my 32-year career with CFS I always enjoyed having Doug as a colleague and friend. I won't even try to calculate the number of coffee breaks we shared together (with others), occasionally discussing insect research or lab business or politics or cross-country skiing, often just chatting, gossiping or exchanging bad jokes!
I was fortunate to be a member of the insect control group which he led for a time and where his scientific knowledge and people skills were used to good effect.
As our younger daughter, Sylvia and her family have moved to Chipman Corner in the Valley, between Kentville, Wolfville and New Minas, we have had an opportunity to get to know the beautiful area where Doug spent some of his early days and indeed, I have often thought of him while there.
Doug will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences.
George and Annette”
“I send my condolences to Aunt Betty and family. Myself, as a gradute from the University of Guelph in Bilology in the 1980's, I perused the library and used to read many of Uncle Doug's, and in fact Grandpa Eidt's scientific journal papers. Distance made in person contact difficult, but Uncle Doug seemed to have time for absolutely everyone. When I joined facebook, one of the first contacts was my Uncle Doug. I have recently put to DVD, old 8mm film footage taken by Doug's late brother Wilf (my father) in the early 1960's on a trip out east. Wondeful footage of Uncle Doug and Betty, Uncle Lloyd and Ginny, and a whole bunch of my little cousins running around all over the place! If any of you would like a copy I would be happy to send one.
Thinking of you folks,
David Gerald Eidt.

“Been thinking of you and praying even before I read of Doug's passing. I am in NS on vacation so can only send my prayers and condolences this way. Give thanks for the wonderful man he was and the life he lived and may God strengthen and comfort you all at this time.”
“I will always remember living across from Dog and family back in 1959, they were our closest friend for years. Or deepest sympathies to Betty and the boys, you were all like family. Enjoyed Oromocto lake for sure. love and God bless , fro us, Les and Pam.”
“I am so grateful to have been able to visit last August and in 2008. Doug had such a "joie de vie" and embraced life at its fullest. It was wonderful to see his garden, workworking shop and to visit his church and community. I will remember my Uncle Doug and everytime I hang the pewter Christmas ornament that he bought for me in 2008. May God's peace be with all of you at this difficult time. Love Susan”
“I remember Doug as a beautiful person with a great personality. Kind and giving of his time. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. Love Barbara J. Gill”
“I will treasure my memories of Uncle Doug. Although I did not get to see him very often, due to the distance between Ontario and New Brunswick, I will never forget our visit to the camp and enjoyed talking to him through email and facebook. He always asked about my family and shared about his. Rest in peace Uncle Doug. You will always be loved. To Doug's family, I am thinking about you and hope you find comfort in knowing that your father was a good man, who had a wonderful life. Hugs to all.
Janet”
