Louis Raymond Barrie, 84, Greening Drive, Antigonish, passed away on Sept. 28, 2009, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Florence, Cape Breton County, he was the oldest child of the late George William and Lucy (Morris) Barrie.
In his younger years Louis worked in the Cape Breton coal mines and the gold mines of Quebec. He later was plant manager of maintenance and construction with the Metropolitan Toronto Separate School Board for 25 years. In 1990 he retired and with his wife, Rosella, moved back to Nova Scotia to reside in Tracadie.
Louis served nine years in the Armed Forces; two of those years in Germany and one year in Korea.
He was a proud member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 59, Antigonish.
When living in Ontario, he enjoyed boating and cottage life. In his retirement he was active in St. Peter’s parish, Tracadie, as a member of the parish council and church choir. Bowling was also one of his favourite past times.
In 2007, Louis and Rosella moved to Antigonish in order to be closer to town services. He was a member of St. Ninian’s parish.
Surviving are his wife, Rosella (Cluett); daughters, Rita (Scotty) Stewart, April (John) Shepherd, both of Ontario; sons, Lewis (Maxine), George (Nancy), both of Ontario, and Paul (Eva), Newfoundland; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Rudderham and Irene Jobes; half-sisters, Gloria Sutherland and Sharon Barrie; half-brothers, Alison Bezanson, George, James and Fred Barrie; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Vivian, half-brother, Glen Barrie and nephew, Calvin Rudderham.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish, Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, Friday at 11 a.m. with Fr. John Barry presiding, Burial in the parish cemetery.
