Sybil Ann Whitman

Passed in: Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada
Passed on: August 4th, 2011

WHITMAN, Sybil Ann - With her loving family by her side, Sybil Ann Whitman of Fredericton passed away peacefully on Thursday August 4, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Sybil attended Bridgetown Regional High School and went on to postsecondary studies at Mount Allison University, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet in Germany, Dalhousie University and Université de Moncton, earning an M.A. in German and a B.Ed. Sybil is survived by her parents, Malcolm and Miriam Whitman of Bridgetown, NS; her brother Shane and sisters Sheena and Steffany and their spouses Peggy, Dave and Mike; by her husband Henri Couture, sons Nathaniel and Toby Couture, daughter-in-law Iuli Popescu, and grandson Samuel; by brothers-in-law Camille, Apollinaire, Jules-Denis, Adélard and Noel Couture of St.-Camille QC, and sisters-in-law Lucie, Elizabeth, Clotilde and Noella of Quebec and by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Sybil taught elementary school French in Sussex and the surrounding area for two years at the start of her career, and after the family moved to Fredericton, she began a long career in the provincial public service as a translator. She was a long-time certified member of the CTINB, the professional association of translators, interpreters and terminologists in the province, serving two terms on the Board as secretary and two years as president. Sybil and Henri were members of the Thomists Dance Club for twenty years, and Sybil sang in the Fredericton’s Choeur de Soulanges for many years. These were two of her greatest pleasures in life. She also enjoyed hiking, especially with Henri, and never lost the desire to travel and discover unknown parts of our country and the world outside, when possible. She treasured her friends perhaps more than they knew. Although there will be no visitation, a memorial service will be held from Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Friday September 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Voluntary donations would much be appreciated by the family, I would ask only that donors specify that their gifts are to be toward research into the causes of cancer. Online condolences and the sharing of memories may be expressed through www.bishopsfuneralhome.com
