STAIRS, REV. MALCOLM LELAND - (August 31, 1921 - August 22, 2011) - Malcolm Stairs went to be with his Lord and Saviour on August 22, 2011 at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Perth-Andover, N.B. after a four month battle with cancer. Born August 31, 1921 in Temperance Vale, York Co. N.B., he was the oldest son of the late Lee Nelson Stairs and Bessie Almon (Chapman) Stairs. He grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ as his Saviour November 9, 1938. He attended Carleton Co. Vocational School (1939 - 1941). During World War II, he served in the R. C.A.F. as a navigator. Following the war, he took his high school training through a Veteran's Affairs program in Moncton, N.B., graduating in 1947. Being called to Christian ministry, he attended Gordon College, Mass. USA, graduating with honors in 1952 and with high honors from Gordon Divinity School in 1955. During his years at College and Divinity School, he served the Lord in summer pastorates in: Alma, N.B. -- 1949; Juniper, N.B. -- 1950 and 1951; Forest City, N.B. -- 1952 and 1953 and Baillie, N.B. -- 1954. On November 17, 1955 he was ordained in the Andersonville United Baptist Church and continued his ministry on the Baillie field until 1959, when he moved to Fairhaven, Deer Island, N.B. to be their pastor. On July 9, 1960, he married the former Joyce McLaughlin. Over the years their ministry included the following pastorates: Fairhaven Deer Island, N.B. 1959 to 1965; Cody's N.B. 1965 to 1970; Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, N.S. 1970 to 1976; Perth-Andover, N.B. 1976 to 1986. He retired August 31, 1986, but continued to serve the Lord as Interim Pastor at: Perth-Andover, N.B. -- October 1992 to May 1993; Grand Falls / Ortonville, N.B. -- December 1993 to March 1999; Grafton, N.B. -- May 1999 to September 1999. As long as his health permitted he continued to do supply preaching in various churches.He was an avid gardener and took great pride in the appearance of his home and yard. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years; two children and seven grandchildren; daughter Mary (Kenneth Graham) and grandchildren Nathan, Nicholas, Kennedy and John of Good Corner, N.B.; son David (Katrina Furge) and grandchildren Mark, Abigail and Emma of Caledonia, Ont. He is survived by brothers Karl Stairs (Madge) of Ottawa and Osborne Stairs (Arvilla) of Temperance Vale; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by son Mark (July 21, 1978) and brothers Waldo and Lawrence.
Family will receive visitors at White's Funeral Home, 20 Industrial Park St., Perth-Andover, N.B. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Wednesday, August 24th. Following a private burial, a memorial service will take place at the Aroostook Baptist Church, 280 Main St., Aroostook, N.B. on Thursday, August 25th at 2 pm.
