Mary 'Mae' (MacNeil) Nickerson

Mary 'Mae' (MacNeil) Nickerson

Born: March 1st, 1937

Passed in: Irish Vale, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: September 6th, 2011

Mary E. ‘Mae’ (MacNeil) Nickerson, 74, of Halifax passed away suddenly with her husband of 46 years at her side on Sept. 6, 2011 in Irish Vale, Cape Breton County in their summer residence, the same home in which she was born.
Born on March 1, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Sarah Anne MacNeil.
Mae was a long time educator and resident of North End Halifax. She was a member of Blessed Mother Teresa Parish (formerly St. Stephen’s) for 43 years.
Mae finished her grade 12 in Mabou and went on to graduate from Normal College in Truro. She worked hard and diligently to pursue further education through the Nova Scotia Teachers College attending evening and summer sessions to upgrade her teaching license.
Mae was a dedicated teacher for 36 years, retiring in 1992. She began her teaching career at her home parish of Johnstown, Cape Breton and after two years, moved on to teach in Spryfield, first at G.K. Butler and then at Central Spryfield. Mae taught all of her years in Spryfield in Grade One and took great joy from all of the young children who had the good fortune to be in her class. Her caring and compassion, as well as her advocacy for her students left a lasting legacy.
Mae was an avid sports fan and loved watching hockey, baseball and curling. She and Joe also enjoyed following Saint Mary’s Huskies Varsity Programs.
She was devoted to her family and took great pride in all of their accomplishments. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and she seized every opportunity she could to support them. Mae loved nothing more than sitting down with her sons-in-law, Ken and Larry, to a game of crib.
Mae and Joe got great pleasure from their summers in Cape Breton surrounded by the beautiful Bras d’Or lakes and a wealth of great friends. The door in Irish Vale was always open to all and the many “drop-in” visits were appreciated especially when they were accompanied by a game of cards.
She will be remembered as a woman of deep faith, who offered many prayers to St. Theresa of the Little Flower and over the years actively supported many missions.
Surviving are her devoted husband, Joe; daughters, Anne Louise (Larry O’Brien), Yellowknife, NT and Barb ‘Baba’ (Ken) Scott, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Kathleen, Connor, Taylor and Cameron; brother-in-law, George Myers; nephew, Paul, Toronto and niece, Joanne, Halifax. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary (Harold) Conrad and their children, Paul (Pat), Janet (Sean) Smith, Brian (Caroline) and Susan (Mike) Culligan and sister-in-law, Annabelle Nickerson.
She was predeceased by sisters, Catherine ‘Kitty’ MacNeil, Sadie MacNeil and Marie Myers and brother, Joe D. MacNeil.
Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at Cruikshanks Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 6032 Normandy Dr. , Halifax.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
