Sister Yvonne TOUCANNE

Passed on: October 9th, 2011

Sister Yvonne Toucanne (“Mother Anne”), died peacefully at Bethany Care Centre, Calgary, on October 9, 2011 at the age of 101. She recently celebrated eighty years as a Sister of Charity of St. Louis and was involved in many and varied ministries over these years. She served in the field of education for thirty-five years in Alberta and Saskatchewan, including St. Louis College here in Moose Jaw. She then worked in Tanzania and later volunteered with CUSO in Botswana. Retirement was not on her agenda, therefore, she turned her attention to her special concern, women experiencing domestic violence. Subsequently, she co-founded Sophia House, in Regina in 1988, a residence for women leaving domestic abuse. Sister Yvonne will be remembered for her exuberant “joie de vivre’, for her courage and tenacity in overcoming obstacles to the ministries especially dear to her heart, in Africa, at Sophia House, in social justice and in support for First Nations people. In 2002, she received the Saskatchewan Lt. Governer’s Award for her work. Yvonne will be lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, her students, by those at Sophia House, those she has ministered to and with, and by the many she has befriended over the years.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 - 19th Avenue N.W.) on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
