George Rodger

George Ferguson Rodger died peacefully on October 31, 2011 in his 100th year. The youngest of three sons, George was born on January 10, 1912 to Harriet (McLennan) and Norman Clarence Rodger in Amherst, NS. George was a proud native of Amherst recalling the days with his Dad at the Motor Works which became home to the first car dealership east of Montreal, his car trips to Tidnish , Yarmouth and Carolina and Boston to accompany his parents and their golf games. As a young man George excelled at badminton, played football, curled, golfed at the Marshlands and played for the 1931-32 Champion Amherst 2nd Ramblers Hockey Team. It was his love of golf that stayed with George all his life. He as always delighted to score under his age and his hole-in-one at the Brightwood Course was a highlight. George played across Canada in the Senior Mens’ Golf Tournaments. He enjoyed his golfing buddies, “The Gaspers”, at Ashburn Golf Club where he played till 2008 at age 96. George’s career with the Royal Bank took him to branches in the Valley, Charlottetown, and the Main Branch, George St. Halifax where he retired as Mortgage and Loans Officer. He quipped that they needed five people and an A.T.M. to replace him. George met and married Helen Jean Nelson in 1942 while at the Stewiacke Royal Bank Branch. He was a proud father of George Elliot (Ann) Rodger, Hackett’s Cove and Brian Ferguson (Trudi) Rodger, Glen Haven. His four grandchildren, Peter George Rodger, David Elliot (Melanie Anne) Rodger; Sara Ferguson Rodger and Heather Layne Rodger were a precious topic of conversation and a marvel to him. As well, George leaves a brother, Dr. David E. Rodger (Aged 101) of Regina and many nieces and nephews across Canada. In particular, George delighted in good times and many debates with his nephew, Allan Rodger, Waverley. George was predeceased by his wife, Helen Jean Nelson, in 1993 and by his brother, Major Gen. Elliot Rodger of Ottawa, last year at 103. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service and interment for family and friends will at Pingrove Cemetery, Stewiacke, N.S. at a later date.
