Rebecca Evangeline (Saunders) Pilgrim

Rebecca Evangeline (Saunders) Pilgrim

Rebecca was born on April 20, 1928 in Cook’s Harbour to George and Dinah (Allingham) Saunders. She was the second youngest of six sisters. At the age of eight her mother died. She left Cook’s Harbour to live in St. Anthony Bight with her Aunt and Uncle Harrison and Annie Simms. Rebecca (Beckie as she was known to all) spent the rest of her life in St. Anthony Bight. In 1945, she married William Pilgrim and together they raised their 15 children. She was a hard working woman whose hands were rarely idle. She was a devoted and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was known by hundreds of people and had friends coast to coast and in the United States. On Monday evening she left this world to continue her journey with God. Rebecca leaves a large family, but she leaves a larger space in the hearts and lives of her family and all of those who knew and loved her. She leaves to remember and mourn, her children Ruby (John), Hilda (Dorman), Flo (Garry), Alonzo (Patsy), Harold (Gail), Baxter (Gertie), Bruce (Loretta), Terry, Randy (Mary), Ruth (Terry), Ivy (Cal), Jim (Denise), Lillian (Norman), Trevor (Jennifer), and Mike Jackman; 32 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters Bessie, Keziah (Fred), and Dorcas as well as half-brothers Fred (Elsie), San (Eliza), Roy (Priscilla), Melvin (Carol), and Edgar (Sheila); half-sisters Joyce (Ken) and Velma (Morris); and special cousins she was raised with, Dulcie Cull and Ivy Pilgrim and a multitude of other friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her husband William, daughter Madeline, granddaughter Beckie-Ann, sisters Helen and Vera, and half-brother Havner Saunders. She will be sadly missed. Visitation was held at the United Church in St. Anthony Bight from where the funeral service took place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 with Rev. Stephanie McClellan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.
