Otto Hookey

Born In: Champney's West, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Passed in: Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Hookey, Otto A. – (1925-2011) – After a long and happy life as a husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, Otto died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, predeceased by father and mother William and Sarah, brother Wilfred and sisters Gertrude, Gladys and Veta. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Mabel, loving children Marilyn and Graham and grandchildren Brad, Erica, Garrett, Cameron and Mitchell.

Otto had a distinguished career as a merchant mariner working for 43 years with Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd., rising through the ranks to serve as a Captain and Admiral of the ULS fleet. Still, his passion in life was being in a punt or in the woods fishing and hunting and he was very grateful for over 20 years of healthy retirement during which he could do this with his friends and family. There was rarely a day when he wasn’t “on the go,” from sun up to sun down, hunting, fishing, berry-picking, fixing something at home or helping someone else.

Otto’s friends and family are invited to visit at St. Clement’s Anglican Church, in Champney’s West, on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and to join in the celebration of his life on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. Internment will follow at the Port Rexton Cemetary.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Otto’s memory can be made to The Janeway Children’s Hospital or Ronald McDonald House in St. John’s, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
