Garth M. Freeman - 88, of Scotia, NY, passed away late Thursday evening, October, 20, 2011. Born in Caledonia, Queens County, Nova Scotia, on December 13, 1922, he was the son of the late Lauchlin and Mildred (nee: Weir) Freeman. He was raised and educated in Nova Scotia. Garth entered the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and served as a medic. On February 27, 1943, Garth married Jean Petelka. Garth was employed as a printer for the Halifax Herald until 1955, when he and his family moved to Glenmont, NY, where he worked for the Knickerbocker News for about a year. In 1957, Garth began his employment with The Daily Gazette in Schenectady, and was a member of the International Typographical Union, serving as local president for a short time. During this time, Garth and Jean owned and operated ABC Collectables, an antique shop in Schenectady. Together, they spent summers traveling to visit family. They enjoyed visiting antique stores and flea markets. Garth was a collector of many things, especially records and books. In 1985, they retired to Florida. His wife, Jean, passed away in 1991 after 48 years of marriage. In October of 2008, failing health brought Garth to Altamont, New York to be with family. A devout Roman Catholic, Garth was a communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Altamont, NY. In addition to his parents and wife, Garth was predeceased by his brother J. Laurier and his son, Michael. He is survived by four children, Stephen and his wife, Cherrin Tessitore Freeman of Scotia, NY, Diane and her husband, David Groff of Altamont, Janice and her husband, Ronald Altman of Manitou Springs, CO, and Andrew Freeman of Schenectady; his daughter-in-law, Glenna McCallum, Toronto; his sister, Pauline Hartlen of Liverpool, Nova Scotia; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. A private graveside service was held at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville. Arrangements were entrusted to Griswold Funeral Home, Schenectady.
