Audrey Forbes Hill (MacDonald), 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.
Audrey was the oldest daughter of the late Alexander and Alison (Forbes) MacDonald of Glace Bay.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard Hill; daughters, Barbara (Judy G.), Halifax, Carolyn (Reagh), Lakeview, Miriam (Ed), Sambro and Judy (Karl), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Alison, Katie and Samuel; sister, Lindsay (Lloyd) Gibson, Halifax; brother, Robert (Joan) MacDonald, Truro.
Audrey was predeceased by an infant daughter, Ginette, her brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Tellie MacDonald of North Sydney.
Audrey attended Normal College in Truro and taught at Central School in Glace Bay. Married in 1950, she and her family lived in a variety of places from North Sydney to Portage-la-Prairie to Lelling, France, finally settling in Dartmouth in 1960. Audrey was very active in the United Church as a CGIT leader, Sunday school teacher, bulletin secretary and longtime member and treasurer of the UCW of Port Wallis United Church.
She enjoyed camping over much of western Europe and eastern Canada and we have many wonderful memories of camping trips and canned stew. Audrey also loved to sew and could sew anything from a wedding gown to a teddy bear. She kept active by gardening, bowling and practising tai chi.
The family would like to thank the staff of 3 East for the care they gave Audrey and the compassion they showed to her and her family.
Cremation has taken place. Service will be held at Port Wallis United Church on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at 7 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at a later date in Cape Breton.
