BALCOM, Chester LeRoy “Chet” - of Middleton, formerly of Nictaux passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at home. Born in Middleton, he was a son of the late Royal and Bertha (Whynot) Balcom. Chet was a member of the Nictaux Baptist Church. He retired from the Militia after 11years of service and was a former partner with A.W. Allen’s, Middleton for 44 years. Chet was a member and founding member of the Nictaux and District Fire Department for 54 years and was Fire Chief for 28 plus years. He was a member of the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association, past member of the Western Nova Scotia Fire Association. His life was devoted to the fire service. Chet was a member of the Middleton Lions Club from 1962 to 2006 and a member of the Middleton Vocational School Board of Directors for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Olga Conant; daughters, Carolyn Ann (Gary) Gates, Brooklyn, Annapolis County; Patricia ( Dale) Elliott, Spa Springs; Cyndi ( Eddy) Porter, Nictaux; sons, David (Diane) Balcom; Michael (Wendy) Balcom; Keith Balcom (Nicole LeClair) all of Nictaux; Ricky (Nadine) Balcom, Wilmot; sisters, Katherine (Henry) Prall, Melvern Square; Judy Hoffman-Balcom, Middleton; brothers, Lewis (Bev) Balcom, Middleton; Jimmy (Betty) Balcom, Thedford, ON; Donnie (Karen) Balcom, London, ON; Roy (Susan) Balcom, AB; 13 grandchildren and 7great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Russell; half sister, Pauline and grandson, Scott Gates. Visitation was held Friday, November, 18, 2011 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448. The Funeral Service was held Saturday, November, 19, 2011 in the Nictaux Baptist Church with Rev. Bill McLeod officiating. Private family interment in the Nictaux Community Cemetery.
