William Edgar Welt

Passed in: Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: November 17th, 2011

William Edgar Welt - of Greenwich, Kings County. With sadness, I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Bill, age 87, at the Veterans Wing of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton, on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Bill was a truly gentle man, happy to be with his family and friends. He loved playing the bagpipes, marched in many parades and ceremonies and was highly respected by the members of his Band. Bill was the son of Milton Edgar and Pearl (Drolet) Welt. He grew up in the mining town of Schumacher near Timmins, Ontario and took his schooling there. In 1942 he joined the Army, coming to Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where he took the Officer’s Training Course at Acadia University. He went overseas in 1943, joined the North West Novas and fought in Holland and Belgium until the end of the Second World War. He played the drums in the Victory Parade in Brussels and Amsterdam. Bill started work in engineering/designing with the Ontario Department of Highways in Toronto and later was transferred to Albuquerque and finally settled in Tucson, Arizona. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty, of 50 years, and is survived by their two loving daughters, Elaine Irvine, living with her husband, James, in California, and Bonnie Welt, living in Toronto. For several years, with his second wife, Margaret Forsyth Welt, he spent six winter months in Tucson and six summer months in Nova Scotia, and joined friends in bagpipe bands in both places. In 2007, he settled on the farm in Greenwich, Nova Scotia and treasured the longtime friendships made with the CAUC (Canadian Army University Course) and his family here. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There was no visitation, by request. Funeral service was held at the Greenwich United Church on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. with reception following at the church. Reverend Robyn Brown-Hewitt will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veteran’s Wing of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital where Bill received excellent care from staff. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
