Harry Smith
Dr. Harry John Smith, BSc.(Agr), DVM, MVSc.
The family and many friends of Dr. Harry John Smith gathered at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Sackville, NB, on Friday, December 9, 2011, to celebrate his life and share in his funeral Eucharist. Canon Kevin Stockall was the celebrant, assisted by Archdeacon Richard McConnell, Shediac, NB, who also delivered the homily. The organist, Helen Tucker, directed the combined choirs of St. Paul's and St. Ann's Anglican Church, Westcock, NB.
Two of Harry's grandchildren, Jack Gillett, Halifax, NS and Emma Smith, Ottawa, ON, read the lessons - Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 and Revelation 21: 1-7. The Gospel reading was from St. Matthew 5: 1-9, the passage known as The Beatitudes; this passage was also the theme of the homily.
Harry's younger son, Stephen Smith, Ottawa, ON, read the poem, "High Flight", a tribute to the passion for flying he shared with his father. Reflections on Harry's life were given by his older son, Adm. Andrew Smith, Ottawa, ON, and his stepdaughter, Sara McFarlane, Halifax, NS, on behalf of Leigh McFarlane and the whole McFarlane family.
The service was followed by a reception in the Great Hall of St. Paul's, prepared by the ACW of St. Paul's Church. Funeral arrangements were provided by Jones Funeral Home, Sackville, NB, and the family is grateful to Weston Jones and staff for their competence and compassion.
On Saturday, December 10, the family travelled to Port Hilford, NS, where Harry's ashes were laid to rest in Lakeside Cemetery (the Point). The Reverend Norman Pearce conducted the committal service, followed by a meal shared with family and friends in the Indian Harbour Lake Community Centre, catered by the ACW of St. Thomas Anglican Church.
Harry was beloved by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed.
