Gillis, Sister Margaret, formerly Sister Mary Lucia, 57, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse of the Congregation, on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, in the 56th year of her religious life.
Born in North Sydney, NS, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy (MacNeil) Gillis.
Sister Margaret entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1954, pronounced her first vows in 1956 and her perpetual profession of vows in 1959. Sister spent most of her years serving in the field of education. In 1958 she obtained her Junior Diploma in Education from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, and began her teaching ministry. While continuing in her ministry, she upgraded her education and her teaching license. In 1969 Sister Margaret graduated with her B.A., and in 1970 her Bachelor of Education Degree, both from the same University. She received her graduate diploma in Elementary Education from the University of Alberta, Edmonton. She received a Master’s of Science in Management Degree from Notre Dame University, Indiana, in 1995.
Sister Margaret taught school for thirty-three years, and for twenty-two of those years she also carried principal ship. In Nova Scotia, Sister taught for the School Boards of Guysboro Co., Cape Breton Co., and Northside-Victoria Co., and for two years she was with the Catholic School Council of North Kamloops, British Columbia. From 1994 to 1999, Sister Margaret served as General Treasurer of the Congregation. She acted as Local Leader in the communities of sisters in St. Joseph’s Convent, Dingwall, NS, St. Monica Convent, Lethbridge, AB, and at Marian Community, Antigonish, NS.
Sister Margaret is survived by two sisters: Sophie Gakis, Calgary, and Jenny Liska, North Sydney; and one brother: Ambrose. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers: Bert, Carmen, Archibald and Michael; and by one sister, Mary MacSween.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning today, December 30, at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held this evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, December 31, at 2:00 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
