Mansfield, Denton Thurlow – 80, of Garden Lots, Lunenburg County, passed away December 16, 2011 at the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax. Born on December 2nd, 1931 in Westfield, Queens County he was the son of the late Hastings and Rosella (Theriault) Mansfield. His working career started in the Mersey woodlands and spanned to surveying and scale tally clerk during the construction of power lines and roads in Queens County during the 1940’s. The bulk of his career (30+ years) was working for Powers Brothers in Lunenburg. His most memorable project was being part of the building of the Confederation Building in Charlottetown, PEI. Three wonderful years were spent living on the island with his wife and kids in tow. Still working for Powers Brothers, he moved the family to Lunenburg in 1965 and took up residence in Garden Lots. Denton’s love of music lasted his entire life. He had many fond memories of playing guitar & singing in a band for numerous dances and Fairs in Queens County in the 1940’s and 50’s. His most precious times of singing were with his children, Pamela and Blair. The Mansfield Family was known for their Bluegrass Gospel singing and always enjoyed singing at local fund raisers and church services. Denton’s pride and joy were his grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and watched them grow into the wonderful young adults they are today. His beloved dog Shadow misses him, but he will continue to look after his slippers. Denton was a member of the Westfield United Baptist Church. He regularly attended church at the Northwest United Baptist Church where he was the Greeter and an Usher. His warm smile and sense of humor will be missed by all he greeted at the door. Denton is survived by daughter, Pamela (Mickey) Savory of Centre; son, Blair Mansfield (Carla) of Lower Sackville, grandchildren, Rachael, Adam, Matthew and Amelia and sister Erma Frail of Westfield and many loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife the former Virginia Frail, sisters; Nancy, Theressa “Teddy”, Avis and brothers; Lawson, Clinton, Marvin, Arley and John “Sterling” and special niece Geneva. Visitation was held on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, from 7-9pm at Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home in Lunenburg. A beautiful celebration of Denton’s life was held on Wednesday, December 21st at 11am in the Northwest United Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Moore officiating. The Northwest Choir sang “God Will Take Care of You” and grandson, Adam sang John Denver's song “Country Road” and he also shared special memories of Grampie. Granddaughters Rachael and Amelia lovingly told everyone how special their Grampie was to them. Daughter, Pamela also spoke of how proud Blair and her were to have been blessed with such a wonderful Dad. At the close of the service the hymn “Supper Time” was played from a personal CD sung by The Mansfield Family. Pallbearers were Denton’s nephews; Benson Frail, Pat Frail, Scott Mansfield, Danny Mansfield, Kevin Mansfield and Dwight Mansfield. Burial took place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Westfield, Queen’s County. A reception followed at the Westfield Community Hall. Special memories were shared at the hall, with a few songs being sung by great nephew Stewart Frail and a delicious selection of food was shared by all.
