DUFFY, Brother C. P., C.F.C. – Passed away, on Thursday, January 12, 2012, in New Rochelle, N.Y., at the age of 80, Br. Charles Peter Duffy of the Christian Brothers. Br. Duffy was a well-known educator who spent many successful years in Newfoundland. He taught at Holy Cross School from 1951 to 1954 and at St. Bonaventure’s College from 1954 to 1961. At St. Bon’s, besides teaching the senior classes, he was responsible for the boarding students, and also acted as athletic director. He was an active member of the Newfoundland Teachers’ Association.
In September 1961, he was appointed founding principal/superior of the new St. Francis High School in Harbour Grace, a Catholic High School, which served much of the Conception Bay area. Br. Duffy quickly succeeded in establishing a rapport with the students and staff and placed St. Francis High School. on a very high educational level. He will be fondly remembered by the students and staff of St. Francis and of the other schools where he taught.
After completing his term of office at St. Francis in 1967, Br. Duffy returned to his native New York where he assumed the post of professor of Business Administration at Iona College, New Rochelle. For many years he alternated his lecturing there with teaching English as a second language in Germany and China,
Br. Duffy’s funeral obsequies took place at Holy Family Church, New Rochelle, on Monday, January 16th. Following the Mass of Christian Burial, Br. Duffy was interred in the Christian Brothers cemetery in West Park N.Y.
