Lyle L. Haggerty, CD - 92, of East Hall’s Harbour, Kings County, passed away peacefully, Monday, January 23, 2012 in the Veteran’s Memorial Building, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born at Mountain Front, Kings County, he was the son of the late Nell (Haggerty) Shaw. He attended school at Mountain Front. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940, served in Canada and overseas, having a very colorful career, and retired in 1961, having served for 21 years. He was awarded the Coronation Medal and the Defence of Britain Medal, among others. He was appointed the official clerk for the 1959 Royal Tour of the Maritimes and in recognition of his service, received a citation from the Canadian Secretary to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, as well as the Canadian Decoration. Upon retirement from the R.C.A.F., he was employed by Fairey Aviation Aircraft Company in Dartmouth, following which he accepted the position of Personnel Manager at the Canadian Linen Supply Company, later joining the Public Service of Canada, from where he retired in 1989. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and since retiring, was involved in volunteer work at Camp Hill Hospital and was Secretary of the Veteran’s Council. He is survived by and will be truly missed by his many cousins and a nephew. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his grandparents, several aunts and uncles and a half-sister, Gloria. There was no visitation, by request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion service and funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Michael Shreve officiating. Burial took place in the East Hall’s Harbour Cemetery, Kings County. Lyle had a life long love of animals and donations in his memory may be made to the Kings County S.P.C.A.
